Llangollen & Chirk 2025

Newtown

We set off Friday night after work and drove to Newtown where we spent the night in the carpark. We had to stop on the way at Llangybi, near Lampeter as we saw a Tin Man on the side of the road and having just listened to The Wizard of Oz story on the Yoto we had to stop for a photo.

Saturday morning we had breakfast in the Wetherspoons then took a walk around the town park before driving up to the British Ironworks.

British Ironwork Centre

Set in over 70 acres there are endless amazing sculpture to see. I believe they are all unique and made from waste materials.

Horseshoe Falls

After this we continued north all the way to Llangollen where we had a picnic and a paddle at Horseshoe Falls.

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

That night we parked up in the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct overflow carpark ready for our boat trip over the aqueduct the next day.

  • the highest canal aqueduct in the world.
  • the longest aqueduct in Great Britain
  • 307m long (1,007ft)
  • just 3.6m wide (12ft)
  • 19 pillars each span is 13,6 m wide (44ft)
  • 38.4 meter tall (126ft)

Ty Mawr Country Park

After the boat trip we had a picnic in the Ty Mawr Country Park.

There are various farm animals that you can meet at the Country Park aswell as two llamas.

There is a path around the edge with numerous places where you can take a paddle in the river.

Chirk Castle

On Monday morning we explored Chirk Castle. It’s a beautiful medieval castle with stunning grounds and views.

After the castle we visited Chirk Leisure Centre for a swim and then drove home.
