• Bodrum, Turkey 1988

We stayed at the Hotel Ayaz in Bodrum. This was a culture shock holiday for me, I remember absolutely loving the colourful sparkly slippers (I got a gold pair complete with yellow bobble to take home).s

I also remember all the locals smoking from the hubbly bubblys on the pavements around the marina.

  • Costa del Sol, Spain & Gibralter 1988

My parents bought an apartment in Hotel Jupiter in Benalmadena on the Costa del Sol.

We did numerous visits, always out of season as the apartment was rented out. The hotel had the most amazing pool and I never once got to swim in it as it was always drained for maintenance during our off season visits.

We took our hire car into Gibralter and I remember the monkeys jumping on my shoulder to get the food. I loved it.

  • Playa del Ingles, Gran Canaria 1987

I have vivid memories of the hotel stairway as of numerous days we found a swallow resting in the stairwell. I now know that they would have been resting during their migration, but at the time we thought they were trapped so I remember picking them up (clearly they really were that exhausted) and carrying them down to the ground and releasing them back up into the air. I was only 8 and thought I was helping them.

We stayed at Ifa Regina Mar.

  • Cefalu, Sicily 1987

Another week off school allowed me to visit Cefalu in the Italian island of Sicily. We stayed in Le Sabbie D’oro.

I have three strong memories from this holiday, the first was the hotel pool. It was the coldest and deepest pool I’d ever been in and as such, I had the entire pool all to myself all week. Any adult who dared to jump in, promptly jumped straight back out.

My second memory was my dad making friends with a local man who invited us back to his vineyard up in the hills, which we gratefully accepted.

The third memory was the long hot hike up the Mount Etna volcano and wishing my parents would let me ride one of the donkeys up the steep hill.

  • Orlando, Florida 1987

In February, my nan took me to a whole new continent and we spent two weeks exploring the Disney Parks in Florida.

I have fond memories of my nanny singing along on the ‘It’s a Small World’ boat ride, whilst my favourite was Wet n Wild waterpark.
